SEO and Images Using Divi?

SEO and Images Using Divi?

Make Sure You Do This Using Images with the Builder Image Module!

The Divi Builder when you get used to it it is a fantastic way to quickly build out a blog post or indeed a page of any kind. And you can create visually appealing content quickly.

Unfortunately, most people do not realise that if you use the Divi builder to insert an image into a post or page for SEO purposes it is critical that you do one important extra step apart from simply inserting the image itself.

In short good practice would be to have decided in advance what the keyword or keyphrase for your post or page is going to be and then set about drafting your post or page and when it comes to inserting an image into the post or page using the Builder follow the step demonstrated in the video below.

If you do not do this there will be no alt text to be found by search engine spiders and hence the image will give you no SEO juice at all, whereas if you follow the simple step of inserting the alt text using the methods described in the video – all is fine.

Essentially all you have to do when you upload the image is then switch over to the advanced tab while still in the image module and under attributes insert the keyword or keyphrase into the alt text box.

This is a step not to be skipped and is important/critical for SEO

Watch the Video!

And see how easy it is to actually ensure your images are visible for SEO purposes’

This is a step not to be skipped when using the Divi builder.

Quick Overview of the Divi Builder

Quick Overview of the Divi Builder

Divi Builder Overview

You can compose any sort of layout for a blog post using the Divi Builder.

A criticism some make of Divi is that it is complicated but I would suggest that in fact like any online tool having lots of options to do things is desirable.

In the video below I consider the layout of two blog posts both of which were composed using just the Divi Builder and one post has a full-width layout whereas the other one has a right sidebar layout.

The point about Divi as you will see from the video is that you will essentially be deciding whatt your key phrase for your post is,  you will source a featured image for the post and then you will create your actual content for the post itself – which can be a mix of anything allowed by the modules available in Divi Builder itself.

Essentially firstly you will create a section and into that section, you will insert a row and into the row, you will be inserting whatever module that you decide is appropriate for your content -from a text module up to a video.

The video considers two blog post layouts and an overview as to how they were created using sections rows and modules.

We will produce another video where we will create a blog post from scratch using the Divi builder so that you have a reference point to begin -blog posting.

WordPress Pros and Cons for beginners?

WordPress Pros and Cons for beginners?

Some Pros and Cons of WordPress?

This post is directed towards beginners contemplating their first business website and the pros and cons of WordPress in particular. Started in 2003, WordPress has become the biggest content management system (CMS) on the market. It has grown from its early days as a blogger platform and today is used for directories, forums, galleries, business websites, online shops and more.

WordPress is the most popular platform lots of people use to build sites for a couple of reasons. It’s the platform of choice for clients that want a content management system as

  • it is considerably more affordable than other website options
  • you do not have to be a coding expert
  • it’s open-source software.
  • it offers extensive functionality options with thousands of plugins available to enhance the core WordPress.

All platforms online have their issues and challenges but you should very strongly consider using WordPress for your website, and we will highlight the general PROs and CONs of WordPress . Let’s start with a few key things WordPress has going for it.

Pros and Cons of WordPress – PRO #1 – User Friendly

Because WordPress started as a blogging platform, it’s easy for you to navigate, create and edit pages and posts. You can learn it quickly and don’t need to have a lot of experience in creating websites to be able to operate the site.

PRO #2 – Relatively Inexpensive

As open-source software, WordPress is free to install and has cost-effective hosting plans available from many providers. There are countless themes to choose from, giving a professional look with a low-cost price tag or you can have a custom WordPress website built so you can really stand out from the crowd. Many technically inclined people in the WordPress community share their expertise through forums, posts and videos online which can mean free support for you.

There are all sorts of plugins available to enhance things- a word of caution- they are not all equal. Many free and paid plugins are available but with the “pro versions” the costs can add up as well as the complexity and you may require initially the services of a professional to ensure everything is working together in the way you wish.

PRO #3 – SEO

We all know the importance of Search Engine Optimization in the context of your site being found online but how easy is it to implement on your site?

WordPress actually makes it pretty straightforward with many SEO plugins to ensure your site is optimized, for example the highly recommended Yoast SEO plugin. Yoast allows you to easily set up on your site important things like meta tags, page titles, meta descriptions and sitemaps. It also provides a visual of how your meta descriptions will look in search results and offers suggestions to improve the SEO score of a page or post.

However, for a beginner, it might be wise to do training early on with a WordPress coach on some SEO fundamentals alongside training to create content itself for your site.

Pros and Cons of WordPress – CON #1 – Plugins

To generalize using too many plugins can have a downside. Apart from the cost adding up, they can clash with your theme and break things so the more you add to your website the more you need to ensure they are all working together. Also, there are frequent theme and plugins updates and if they are not done regularly basis can have a negative effect your website and represent  a huge risk on the security front.

Always try to gauge the quality of a plugin and install it with caution. You may find it sensible to hire an experienced WordPress provider to design and build a custom website for your business as they will know the ins and outs of the theme they install and will use the best plugins alongside it to ensure you have a solid, user and SEO friendly website that will appeal to your target audience.

CON #2 – Security & Updates

WordPress websites can be subject to security breaches especially when themes and plugins are not updated. Hackers like popular platforms on the internet like WordPress. However, lest you take this risk as a problem there are a few top-notch security plugins available to use such as Wordfence and iThemes security

The way to counteract risk is to ensure the WordPress core software and plugins and themes are updated because many updates are released specifically to improve security.  You can do these updates yourself and 95% of the time your site will not be adversely affected. However, in some cases an update to a plugin or WordPress core will cause a conflict between plugins and the core, affecting the functionality or site design. This can be because WordPress and plugin developers generally do not launch updates at the same time.

You could of course arrange a maintenance package with the creator of your site for what’s often a reasonable fee as they will usually take a backup of the site to cover you if there are any problems.  We ourselves only charge our clients for actual time spent working on the site. As well, some of our clients choose to do the updates themselves and only contact us if issues arise from the updates.

CON #3 – Page Speed

Some WordPress sites are often oversaturated with databases, code and too many plugins, all of which will slow your site speed. A WordPress site creator however will configure things to optimise speed through theme adjustments and a caching plugin also tweaked.

Pros and Cons of WordPress - Summary

Any person starting out online can pretty quickly learn how to use WordPress and the benefits far outweigh the cons. WE suggest starting out that you save time and headache and get the bones of your site set up by a specialist and use the resources provided by them to move forward on your own bat.You can do so much with WordPress-really!

Why Image Size Matters?

Quality visuals are a crucial part of successful digital marketing. Images are used throughout your website, social media channels and any other marketing materials. Those images are often the first thing that people see when they engage with you and decide whether to trust your brand or not. If your images aren’t displayed appropriately, for example wrongly sized or pixelated, it can affect your entire brand. Image size also matters in page load speed – both on desktop and mobile. Page speed is measured by load time, and how long it takes for the browser to display all content on a page. Large graphics make your pages load too slowly, and this in turn can make your visitors leave.

Moreover, web page load speed plays a very important role when search engines like Google rank your website.

Search engines aim to give the best experience when a user is searching for and visiting a site and they factor in page speed as important – slow sites will not be put very high up on the list.

According to PicMonkey “

When saving images for a website or blog, the site layout that will often dictate how many pixels high and wide you need to size your image. On our blog, for instance, the images within the posts are around 600 pixels wide. Header images that span the entire page might be larger—in the neighborhood of 1200 pixels—which leaves it up to the browser to stretch it if the browser window is larger.

If you over-accommodate for large displays with big image sizes that take a long time to load, you’ll end up serving images that slow down your site. It’s a balancing act. You want the smallest file that works for your purpose. When you’re not matching an image to a particular layout, you can be fairly loose with the size. Most people consider a “high resolution” share on the internet to be in the neighborhood of 1200 to 1600 pixels wide.

Large Image Size Wastes Available Website Allowance

Most of you are using Siteground to host your website and beginners do not realise that there is a size limit in so far as your website is concerned meaning that the content of your website which would include text, images, themes and plugins cannot exceed your allowed total size limit and the graphic from siteground to the left has the allowed webspace for their plans highlighted

The point is that you can very quickly fill up your website if you upload too many images that are simply too big for what’s required or indeed even needed.

Images Used Incorrectly will slow down the Site

That in a nutshell is why you need to resize and compress – very often images take up most of the size of a page or post- so keep that size reasonable and the content simply loads faster.

Images Overview for Divi

Images Overview for Divi

The row below has a layout -column that is half/half by way of design.

You could insert an image module (any divi module) on either or indeed both halves.

The width of this site is set at 1290px so a half column using an image of 600px wide will work fine. ( close enough to half of visible area)

The height will often be determined by how much text you want to use in the second column.

The more text you will want a larger height.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout.

The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English.

Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.

Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

The video just gives you an overview of inserting images into different columns from:

  • half/halfcolumn
  • full width
  • third/third/third

This row below has a 3 column layout allowing me to insert 3 graphics if I wish.

Of course, I could use a text module instead of an image module but thinking just about the image size you think of a 1/3 of 1290px for the width.

The height is a matter of taste.

In passing all 3 images have the same width and height so they align perfectly.

For this row below – for the columns layout -as seen below-I picked a 1/3 and 2/3 layout and inserted an image into the 1/3 section that is 300 px wide – works perfect.

You can also style every aspect of this content in the module Design settings and even apply custom CSS to this text in the module Advanced settings.

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet.

It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or

A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words!

You can purchase any type of image online but in general they are expensive to say the least. Just go Googling.

There are situations where you will or may have no option but to purchase some images.

However, here are 5 sites where you can download and use royalty free many high quality images.

You do not need legal issues over the improper and unauthorised use of images in your online marketing.

PIXABAY

Best thing about this site is the variety of images from vectors to pictures and more- the smallest sizedownloadable can be uploaded as is-larger sizes need compression/optimisation.

UNSPLASH

Graphics here can be more high-end in quality but huge file sizes so resize and compress whatever you download here.

LIFE OF PIX

Some interesting photos are available here but dont forget to resize and compress.

PEXELS

Graphics here are high-end in quality but huge file sizes so resize and compress whatever you download here. Useful for white collar businesses.

RESHOT

Another great site for images that you can use for pages and posts.

Why Use webp format for your site graphics?

Why Use webp format for your site graphics?

Using GIMP to create your webp images?

What is a WebP Image? Why use them?

WebP is a modern image format that provides improved lossless and lossy compression for images on the web.

WebP images are around 30% smaller on average than their JPEG or PNG equivalents, resulting in sites that are faster and use less bandwidth.

WebP is supported in all modern browsers.

WordPress and WebP?

Until pretty recently you could not directly upload a webp image into your media library as this capability only came about in release5.8 – we are currently on 5.9.

Now you can upload and use WebP images in WordPress just like you would a JPEG or PNG image (as long as your hosting service supports WebPand most do).

Switching to the WebP format for your images will improve your site’s performance and your site visitor’s experience.

Plugins or do it directly?

When it comes to plugin use the simple good rule of thumb is less is more- faster site-less to break etc etc.

There is a myriad of plugins available to convert images into webp but we suggest you leave them behind because it really is so easy to create a webp image in the first place to simply load into your media library directly- no plugin required.

When you are creating an image for your page or post you are in any event almost always going to resize the image depending on how you are going to use it. This is also straightforward in GIMP.

Using GIMP is not Difficult!

Once you have resized you literally just have to save the image with a .webp file extension and then upload it to the media library.

Job done – file space saved- faster loading etc.

We have created a short video to show how simple the process is.

As a .jpeg file

This is the image used in the video saved as a .jpeg

File size is 36.4 kb

As a .webp image file

This is the image used in the video saved as a .webp

File size is 23.9 kb.

Tiny size and ideal for a blog post.
